How to Have Fun at a Karaoke Bar

by | Sep 12, 2023

There’s no denying it – karaoke is a great way to let loose and have a lot of fun with your friends and family. While a karaoke setup at home is great to practice on, nothing beats the experience of singing along with the high-quality microphones and sound systems offered by a karaoke bar. If you’re planning an evening of karaoke, there is a lot you can do to take your karaoke experience to the next level. Read on for our top tips on how to plan the ultimate karaoke night that your guests will remember for a long time to come.

Choose the Right Venue

Plenty of bars host karaoke nights. While they can be fun, it means that your party must share the karaoke machine with other guests at the bar. It may also discourage some of your shyer guests from having a go. Additionally, a busy bar may not be the ideal location for your party if you’re including children in your group. A private karaoke room takes care of all those worries allowing you and your guests to sing your hearts out without any restrictions. Book a room size that can accommodate all your guests comfortably and you’re good to go!

Pick a Theme, Décor, and Props

Themed parties are always fun and there’s something about wearing a costume that just helps people shed their inhibitions. Your theme doesn’t even have to be musical – just imagine Batman singing ‘Wrecking Ball’!

Check with your venue if you can add some décor to your room. Most venues are absolutely fine with decorations but may charge a small cleaning fee.

Having props on hand can make your guests feel like they are rock stars – think over the top sunglasses, tiaras, or Dolly Parton-esque wigs.

Food and Drink:

Singing is thirsty work. Make sure you have plenty of food and drink at hand for your guests. Make sure you take into account any allergies they may have. Serving a few nice-looking cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks can add glam to your party.

Involve Your Guests:

Audience participation is key to having a good time at a karaoke bar. After all, they’ll all take turns being the performers. Take turns at being the MC, announcing each performer on to the stage. You can even assign a persona to each MC to add to the fun.

Line Up Some Tunes:

This requires some planning but is worth it to keep the party going. Ask your guests to pick a couple of songs they’d like to sing before the party and have them queued up on your karaoke machine right from the beginning. Make sure you line up your more nervous guests after a few of your more enthusiastic ones. This will help your night get off to a good start and help people warm up.

Plan a few duets or group songs as well. Coordinated dances to songs like Backstreet Boys – I Want It That Way or NSYNC’s – Tearing Up My Heart usually have everyone in splits of laughter.

It’s also a good idea to have a playlist of upbeat songs to hand for times when your guests are taking a break from singing. Pick a good mix of songs, old and new, to cater to your guests’ tastes and ages.

Plan Some Games:

Adding games to your karaoke event will make your night stand out as the most memorable karaoke party your guests have ever attended. A few suggestions for games include:

A Music Quiz: A short music quiz during a lull in the singing lets your guests show off their musical knowledge. Sweeten the competition by announcing that the winner gets to choose a singer and the song they have to sing.

Who Sang That?: Write down names of famous singers with particularly distinctive singing styles (think Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Janis Joplin) on small pieces of paper and mix them up in a bowl. Have your guests pick one and sing a karaoke song they have chosen previously in their style. There’s no going back once you’ve heard Bob Dylan sing My Heart Will Go On!
